Committee announces changes to National Service

May 23, 2014 - 1:22am

Women, new citizens and first-generation permanent residents can soon volunteer to perform national service in the Singapore Armed Forces Volunteer Corps, but they must commit themselves to it.

Another key change: giving servicemen up to 24 months to pass, or work out to scrape through, their annual Individual Physical Proficiency Test.

These recommendations were announced in a press conference yesterday to present the findings of the Committee to Strengthen National Service.

Thirty recommendations, mostly aimed at recognising the contributions of servicemen, were revealed in the committee’s report.
