Traffic slowed to a crawl at Bugis yesterday morning after a tipper truck spilt about 10 tonnes of soft clay.

Two lanes had to be cordoned off as Singapore Civil Defence Force officers used hoses and brooms to clear away the debris at the junction of Ophir Road and Beach Road.

The driver of the tipper truck, who only wished to be known as Mr Arul, said the traffic light at the junction had turned amber.

With little time to react, the permanent resident, 38, jammed his brakes, causing about half of the truck’s 20-tonne load to spill onto the road.

The congestion, which stretched as far as Lavender Street and Tessensohn Road, lightened at about 11.45am.

No one was hurt in the incident.
